At the bottom of the support frame is the transverse operator cabin. This is where the operator sits and moves the crane as needed. The gantry operator cabin has clear windows so that the operator can watch the loading and unloading of containers.
The boom of the gantry crane is located on the water side hinge. In this location, it can move up and down as required of the navigator. The spreader is located on the rail and is attached to the cabin where the operator sits by the boom. This location also makes it possible for the crane to move transversely on the boom as it lifts cargo.
The spreader opens and closes to accommodate however many containers must be lifted. Many spreaders will lift four containers at a time.
Uses and Applications
The most common applications for the container crane include the port and shipyard applications. They are the most important part of loading and unloading cargo. Cranes, at their most basic construction, have been in use since the middle ages. Today, container cranes run off the same principles but use computers and motors to operate efficiently.
The crane’s operator runs the crane and the trolley above it runs along the rails by the boom and girder. The spreader locks onto a container and then the hoist lifts that container. The crane moves it from the dock to a truck for loading or from the dock to the ship for loading.
